tribute to #23

By Daniel Strickland on September 16, 2005.

No, I ain’t talking about that Jordan guy. I’m talking about one of our own.

No doubt, this is a great time to be a Spurs fan. But I can’t help being a little disheartened that Devin Brown had to be a casualty of the Spurs’ new signings. Assuming he really gets over his back injury, Devin has the potential to be a very, very good player in this league. Given that Finley and Barry are approaching the geriatric stage by NBA standards, in a year or two Devin would have had a major role on this team again. Hell, he might well have even outplayed them this season.

Having said that, I understand that the Finley signing had to be done and that it’s hard to justify paying someone that deep on your roster 2.5 million plus the luxury tax penalty that his signing would have incurred. This isn’t a polemic against the “cheapness” of our ownership.

Anyway, here’s to you, Devin. I’ll miss you. I’ve loved watching you help the Spurs bitchslap the rest of the league these last two years, and I look forward to your return in 2007.
